Congratulations to Bob Bradley, who will be teaching the Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Course at the 2022 AOAP Conference and Exposition, for receiving the Kelly Ogle Memorial Safety Award.

Bob Bradley has been one of the most active water safety & drowning prevention advocates in the United States for more than 40 years, reaching hundreds of thousands of adults and children through public and private presentations, articles, aquatic safety videos & programs. His professional experience includes acting as an advisor on aquatic facility operation, recreation risk management and safety training. Bradley was instrumental in the development of what is now the National Recreation & Park Association’s Aquatic Facility Operator certification program. Bradley was the founding president of the NRPA’s National Aquatic Branch and was chairman of the national board of directors for the Aquatic Facility Operator program. Today, he is one of six AFO Instructor Trainers in the world and serves on the AFO Manual Editorial & Revision Committee and the AFO Certification Exam Committee.

He also has worked more than 30 years on improving aquatic codes across the United States. For the past decade, Bradley has been working to create enhanced operational codes and certification standards internationally. Since the pandemic swept across the globe, Bradley has pivoted to virtual consultation, training and certification. Recently, he delivered the first AFO Certification course to the Republic of Singapore and helping revise their National Environmental Agencie’s AA 556 Code of Practice for Design & Management for Aquatic Facilities.

Bradley often has given back to the World Waterpark Association membership. He served on the WWA’s Children’s Drowning Prevention Council and has been a presenter for the AFO course as well as a facilitator of WWA University: Waterpark Maintenance Workshop. In 2008, Bradley received the Best Speaker award from the WWA.

Beyond his contributions to the WWA, Bradley was the founding president, treasurer and served for more than a decade as a board member of the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Central Arizona. He was also a founding officer and board member of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance. He has worked with residential camps, YMCAs, municipalities, universities, public and private aquatic leisure facilities, waterparks and resorts. He was the Executive Director of the Arizona Chapter and the Southwestern Region of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (formerly the National Spa & Pool Association, not the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance), where he conducted the Certified Pool and Spa Technician training program. He is also a member of Total Aquatic Management’s aquatic consulting team.

Bradley has written numerous professional articles and contributed to training manuals on lifeguarding, water safety and aquatic operation. Bradley co-wrote and produced and Emmy-winning water safety video in additional to several other water safety and lifeguard training videos. He has logged thousands of hours as an ARC Instructor Trainer in water safety, lifeguard training, first aid and CPR.

Bradley holds degrees in liberal arts and recreation administration. He has been married for 33 years to his wife, Lucy, who he met while co-teaching swimming lessons in Gainesville, Florida. They are both rescue scuba divers. They enjoy diving & traveling with their daughter, Emma, who is also a lifeguard, an Aquatic Facility Operator, a scuba diver and recently wrote a water chemistry app while a junior in high school.
